5 ways to protect your hair from the sun

Updated: Jul 9, 2021

Summer 2021 is activated! The hot girl coach, Meg Thee Stallion is back and the Icy GIrl, Saweetie is Single. As we prepare for the long hot summer days and nights that await ahead, we have to protect our crowns.

UVA and UVB rays from the sun can be damaging to our natural crowns and do more damage than we see. Without proper maintenance during the summer, our hair can become brittle, experience discoloration, increased frizziness and increase split ends. Don’t worry! Here are 5 tips to protect your crown during this summer heat.

  1. Keep Your crown moisturized

During the summer, it is important to moisturize your scalp three times a week. Using 100 percent natural oils such as coconut oil, olive oil, and sesame oil, perform as a natural protector from heat damage. Gently massage any oil of your preference into your scalp and roots to retain moisture. Oils are your crown’s bestie in the summer heat.

2. Try a protective style

We all love protective styles hunny! Going to your stylist for a mini twist set, feed in braids, box braids can also be another option when temperatures begin to rise. Be careful with these styles, they can either protect your hair or disagree with your crown. Check for ppl tension, flaky scalp, itchiness or redness throughout your scalp. While your hair is in these protective styles don't forget to water your mane with oils and sleep with a satin bonnet to maintain the style.

3. Clip those ends girl

Don't be afraid to trim your ends. As the sun dries out your hair, it can cause the fibers in your hair to become dry, this causes split ends. You should assess your split ends monthly depending on hair growth and damage. Cutting these dead friends off can help you maintain a healthy crown and help your hair to retain its moisture.

4. Establish a hair routine

Trust me, I know establishing and maintaining your hair can be a hassle. Loving your crown is the main key to building a healthy mane. Weekly deep conditioner sessions will help to restore and retain moisture during the summer. This is an important step w

hen it comes to preventing brittle or damaged hair. Adding deep conditioner to your weekly routine will make a huge difference when it comes to protecting your crown from the harsh sun.

5. Wrap it

Wrap it up and love it. Cute turban scarfs and styles are a game changer. This option serves as a 100 percent protective style in the heat. Your crown is fully covered and hidden from the sun. Just add some earrings to your style and you are ready to go. #thewraplife
